Career Transition for the mature woman

If you are a woman in your fifties with a desire to change your career, it can feel like your dreams are slowly passing you by. Working in the same industry for many years may be fulfilling – until it’s not.

This can be the time of your life when you start to feel restless. Time is passing by, and you ask yourself – is this all there is? And when you think about what else you might do, you just end up going around in circles. After all, what else do you know? Who would consider hiring you for something else? And the most important question – what do I want to do?

And when potential new clients arrive and ask me those questions, the first thing we do is check their tolerance for risk and change, before we consider whether we will work together. This process definitely requires you to step out of your comfort zone and open up your thinking to possibilities. And there are no guarantees that you will end up with some bright shiny new role.

However, I have seen some great transitions into new ventures. Even those who changed roles but not careers, have found that a coaching program helps them to reinvigorate their passion for what they do. Understanding at a deeper level what you bring to your work and what inspires you can be invigorating and empowering.

One of my clients was in the same industry for over 30 years and over 15 years in the same job. On first glimpse, that might sound an impossible ask to find a new direction and career. But she put in the work and stepped way out of her comfort zone and today loves where she is.
